Taking into account these results will enable the Head Start program to understand families and the unique circumstances in which they live. Head Start staff may plan to ensure it has resources and services available to assist parents address the neighborhood and housing topics highlighted in this report.
As observed through parents’ written responses regarding their experience in the Head Start program, it is evident that Head Start plays an integral role in creating a positive experience for children who are beginning their education. Parents commend Head Start teachers, staff, and directors for the work they do and express gratitude for the care they show their children. The suggestions and recommendations parents made regarding the program revolve around more class time, adding more academics to the curriculum to ensure children are well-prepared for kindergarten, and work further to ensure parents are engaged in their child’s education. Head Start staff may consider more parent trainings that discuss the benefits of play and non-academic activities. This will deepen parents’ understanding of the Head Start curriculum and how learning through play adds to a child’s development. Parents may also find it helpful to participate in more workshops that highlight different aspects of child development, such as socio-emotional development. Participating in such workshops can further encourage parents to learn how engaging their child at home also contributes to the child’s academic success.
By continuing its commitment to children and maintaining good communication with parents, Head Start will address the needs of its families and ensure children succeed in school.
