 Vaccine Information
In California, COVID-19 vaccination appointments are now open to child care workers, along with other essential workers and people age 65 and older.
In scientific studies, 95% of people who got the vaccine were protected from the virus. Scientists have been working hard on vaccines in the coronavirus family for years, so they didn’t need to start from scratch with the COVID-19 vaccine. Health officials say the vaccine has been tested on tens of thousands of people across different races, ethnicities, and ages and say you cannot get COVID-19 from the vaccine. Experts in the field also say that allergic reactions are rare but you may experience mild side effects such
as a sore arm, fatigue, or headache. Side effects are a good sign that your body is building defenses against the virus. And, if you have had COVID-19, that does not protect you from getting it again, so the vaccine is still advised.
There are currently three vaccine manufacturers approved for use under the FDA’s emergency authorization: Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer and Moderna. The Johnson & Johnson vaccine only requires a single shot, while Pfizer and Moderna are a two-shot process.
The Pfizer vaccine requires a second shot around 21 days after the first shot. The Moderna vaccine requires a second shot around 28 days after the first shot. The second dose is essential to the effectiveness of these two vaccines and should be administered at the same location you received your first shot.
The vaccine is available to you at no cost. To receive it, you will need to make an appointment and provide proof of employment such as a paystub, a letter from your employer, and/or an ID badge. After receiving
the vaccine, people should continue wearing a face covering, socially distance, and avoid large gatherings.
You can register for an appointment by clicking here for Los Angeles County and here for San Bernardino County. Appointments may be difficult to find due to the limited supply of the vaccine, but don’t give up and keep checking the website. You can sign up here to receive alerts from state health authorities about eligibility for other members of your family.
