NEEDS AND ACCESS TO RESOURCES FOR HEAD START FAMILIES
CHILD CARE
While Head Start establishes a strong foundation for children’s education, it also strives to provide parents with a quality and convenient child care service. A total of 768 parents provided information about their child care needs for their child in the Head Start program and for another child in their family. Most parents reported that they did not need child care (72.8%). Some parents (7.3%) indicated that they did not know whether or not they needed child care.
Of the 153 (19.9%) parents who reported that they needed child care, 60.1% were English- speaking and 39.9% were Spanish-speaking parents. This finding is similar to results of the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 End-of-the-Year Parent Survey in which more English-speaking than Spanish-speaking parents reported a need for child care.
Taking note of the percentages of parents at each Head Start Center who were in need of child care can help Head Start staff prepare local resources for future parents at their center. As shown in Chart 2, the greatest percentage of parents (15.0%) who answered this question and indicated that they needed child care were from Zine. Robert Fulton was the Head Start Center from which the lowest percentage of parents indicated that they needed child care (0.7%).
