WHERE HEAD START FAMILIES LIVE NEIGHBORHOOD
Neighborhoods play an important role in a child’s development. The built environment and sense of safety can determine whether a family can exercise outdoors and experience a sense of community, all of which can affect a child’s well-being.
Parents were presented with a list of factors and were asked if any of them would make their neighborhood better. A total of 796 (88.8%) parents responded. The largest percentage of paretns chose less crime and violence (393 or 49.4%). More parks or outdoor play and recreation areas had the second highest percentage of parents who selected it (46.4%). Chart 22 demonstrates the percentage of parents for each factor that would improve a neighborhood.
CHART 22: Percentage of parents who indicated that factor that would better their neighborhood
Of the 796 parents who responded to the question about their neighborhood, 27 (3.4%) indicated that other factors not mentioned would make their neighborhood better. A greater percentage of English-speaking parents (55.6%) selected other as the factor that would better their neighborhood.
