Chart 7 ranks the conditions for which parents sought treatment for their child at an ER in the last 12 months.
CHART 7: Percentage of parents and the treatment they sought at an ER in the last 12 months
Of the 154 parents who took their child to an ER, 55.2% (85) were English-speakers, while 44.8% (69) were Spanish-speaking parents. Fever was the condition that prompted most of the parents from both languages to seek treatment for their child at an ER. About half of Spanish- speaking parents (50.7%) sought treatment for their child’s fever at an ER, compared to 37.6% of English-speaking parents. Of the nine conditions listed in the survey, six conditions were selected by a greater percentage of Spanish-speaking parents than English-speaking parents. There were a greater percentage of English-speaking parents who reported that they took their child to the ER because of the flu, stomach-related illness, or injury/deep cut/wound. Chart 8 illustrates the percentage of English and Spanish-speaking parents who selected each condition.
Of the 18.8% of Head Start parents who took their child to an ER in the last 12 months, 67 (43.5%) parents reported that they took their child to an ER to seek treatment for a fever.
