Chart 18 illustrates the percentage of parents and the language in which they prefer to participate. See Table 13 in the Appendix for language preference by Head Start Center.
CHART 18: Parents’ preferred language to participate in Head Start meetings, trainings and events
These results differ from the 2014-2015 Head Start and Early Head Start Parent Training Survey Report which showed that 43.9% of parents prefer workshops to be conducted in English and 39.6% of parents preferred Spanish. Parents preferred Armenian (5.8%) and other languages (1.4%) to a lesser extent. It is important to note that while the Parent Training Report includes responses from all parents as they enter the program, these results are based only on parents who completed and submitted a survey and a greater percent of Spanish-speaking parents completed the survey.
In the present survey, parents had the opportunity to write another language they preferred. Most parents who provided a written response used this space to indicate that they preferred to participate in meetings, trainings or events held in English and Spanish (78.1%). The second most frequent response parents provided was English and Armenian (8.6%). In total, parents wrote eleven different responses. Chart 19 on the following page presents the open-ended responses parents provided to indicate the language(s) in which they preferred to participate.
