Marital Status
There were statistically significant differences in marital status between the AP and CEL families, χ2 (4) = 40.78, p < .001. A greater percentage of parents on the CEL are married (32.0%) as compared with parents in the AP program (10.1%), while a greater percentage of parents in the AP program are single, separated, or divorced (86.4%) compared to parents on the CEL (65.5%). This difference in marital status may help explain the differences found in income (reported next).

Families in the AP program have statistically lower incomes than families on the CEL, χ2 (6) = 30.65, p < .001. More families in the AP program have family incomes less than
$12,000/year (47.3%) as compared with families on the CEL (29.6%). However, given that 96.5% of the AP families and 88.1% of the CEL families make less than $35,000/year, none of these families can be described as affluent.
