A Mother’s Story: Finding Confidence and Connection through CCRC’s Home Visiting Program

For many families, especially single parents, accessing early childhood resources can feel overwhelming. Between work, child care, and daily responsibilities, finding time to seek guidance isn’t always easy. That’s where CCRC’s award-winning Home Visiting program steps in – meeting families where they are, quite literally, by connecting expectant parents and families with children 0-5 years old with an educator who shares helpful tools, resources and personalized support.

For single parents in particular, the impact can be profound. With limited time and support, having a trusted professional provide guidance and encouragement can ease stress and foster a parent-child bond. To truly understand the impact of CCRC’s Home Visiting program, it helps to hear from those who have experienced it firsthand, like stay-at-home mom and student, Wendy Figueroa.

“I found out about the Home Visiting program while I was in the hospital having my second son. From there, I met my Parent Educator, Sandra, who gave me introductory information during our first visit. We had monthly visits in the program where I was provided with information on developmental milestones for my son, as well as resources that are available in the community,” shares Wendy.

In a world where many families are stretched thin, bringing support directly into the home isn’t just convenient – it’s transformative. CCRC’s Home Visiting program reminds us that sometimes, the most meaningful change begins with a simple knock on the door.

As members of our free, voluntary program, parents can receive help finding necessities such as diapers, wipes, food, and other resources, free health and developmental screenings to see how their baby is growing, visits at home, at a local CCRC office, or virtually, with a certified Parent Educator or Family Support Specialist, and so much more!

Rather than a one-size-fits all approach, CCRC’s Home Visiting program focuses on each family’s unique needs. Parent Educators guide parents through activities that promote early learning, model positive interactions, and help track developmental milestones – all in a familiar and stress-free environment.

Wendy continues, “I have five years with the program and my son is going to be graduating in two days! I feel very emotional. It was a very nice experience for me. I got a lot of help. There were so many resources. My son received books and educational activities and there was also a lot of food distributions which was very helpful especially with how expensive everything is now.”

Studies have shown that the early years of a child’s life are critical. Brain development happens rapidly, and the experiences children have during this time shape their future learning, behavior and health. Wendy reflects, “there was a time when my son was in the hospital because he got very sick with COVID and had complications from it. He went into sepsis and was in the hospital for three months, so it was very scary… I reached out to Sandra because I was scared that he was going to get delayed and regress because at the time he was nonverbal because he was incubated and I didn’t know the outcome, so I was reaching out to her…and she was always there to help me with different tips…”

CCRC’s Home Visiting program is more than a service – it’s a partnership. By empowering parents like Wendy, the program creates a ripple effect that extends far beyond the home.

And as we approach Home Visiting Day on April 17th, 2026, it’s a perfect time to recognize the powerful impact these programs have on children, parents, and entire communities. Home Visting Day is an opportunity to celebrate stories like Wendy’s and recognize the professionals who dedicate their time to uplifting families.

“If I do encounter anybody who I know that could join the program, I would tell them to join because of all the resources and all the tips you get. There’s so many things that the Parent Educators know about milestones with your kids. I feel like it’s very educational as well. You get to find out so many things about your kids’ growth.”
