Craft: Make a sand-print with simple ingredients

The artwork children create make for great keepsakes but this craft, especially, will be a sweet reminder of your young one’s childhood. The sand clay handprint craft uses simple ingredients and lets kids explore new textures. This project is suitable for all ages.

You will need: 2 cups of sand, 1½ cups of plain flour (all purpose), 1 cup of warm water, and 1¼ cups salt

Directions:

Step 1: Ask your child to mix together the sand, flour, and salt in a large bowl. Then slowly add the warm water, mixing as you go with a large spoon.

Step 2: Once it’s all combined, remove the mix from the bowl and begin to knead it on a lightly floured surface. It will take less than one minute to form into a soft and pliable ball (similar consistency to play dough).

Step 3: Now show your child how to roll the dough out and use a plastic knife to cut the dough into four pieces (one per child).

Step 4: Flaten each ball of dough onto parchment paper. Then ask your child to place their hand on the dough and press down, before lightly lifting up to leave a handprint.

Step 5: Children can add beads, shells or other fun extras to their hand mold. Punch a hole in the top to create a hanger with string or simply leave as is for a table decoration. Allow the sand to air dry for a day or bake in the oven at 250 F for two hours.
