Exploding Art! Fun activity for you and your children

Spring is here! What better way to embrace this explosive change than with some exploding art? This very fun and very messy activity is a guaranteed hit with the kids of all ages. Make sure you do this activity outside wearing clothes you don’t mind getting paint on. It’s totally worth it!

All items can be purchased on Amazon. Click here to see how you can donate to CCRC with your Amazon purchase.

What you will need

  • Film Canister – One with a tight fitting lid.  The clear ones are really cool to watch since you could see the paint as it builds up pressure before the canister explodes.
  • Slightly watered down Tempera Paint.
  • Alka Seltzer tablets
  • Large sheet of paper
Exploding Art

Step 1

Pour about a tablespoon of watered down tempera paint into your film canister.

Step 2

Break the Alka Seltzer tablets in half.

Step 3

Quickly drop 1/2 a tablet into the paint, tightly put on the lid and give it a quick shake.

Step 4

Quickly place paint filled canister lid side down on your paper and stand back.

Step 5

Repeat.

Exploding Art

The film canister will potentially fly 20 feet in the air, so make sure you are in an open area.  Most of the paint will splatter on the paper, but not all of it.
