After a stop at one of CCRC’s backpack drives, more than a thousand children are now prepared to start the new school year. Kids of all ages were excited to take home a backpack, books, and school supplies. Some even left our event with a fresh new haircut.
Asked his favorite school subject, one 7-year-old boy told us, “College!” His brother preferred “lunch,” which made their mother laugh. The twin boys opted for Disney character backpacks and their mother was happy to receive a hygiene kit for the family.
A pair of grandparents picking up supplies for their grandkids at our Victorville event said the help was much needed. “School supplies are expensive and it’s tough these days to pay the bills and make sure the kids have what they need for school,” the woman said.
All told, we provided 434 families with back-to-school materials. And thanks to the generous donation of time by local hairdressers, 32 children received a fresh haircut to start the new school year.
Funding for the supplies was raised from our Laughs4Literacy Comedy Fundraiser. A second night of comedy is coming up Aug. 31 in Palmdale. Proceeds from that event will benefit our What a Difference a Book Makes, which provides children with an age-appropriate book. Buy your tickets today!
