Many southern California residents have returned to work since the rate of unemployment peaked in May 2020 at nearly 21 percent in Los Angeles County and 14 percent in San Bernardino County.
However, many families are still dealing with the financial impacts of the pandemic and are struggling to afford food and rent, let alone necessary school supplies for their children. That’s why Child Care Resource Center is currently raising money and collecting donations to ensure children in our local community have the supplies they need to succeed at school.
CCRC is hosting a virtual family-friendly bingo event in March to help raise funds to support the 50,000 children and families who rely on our services. One mother in the Antelope Valley says she appreciates the holiday meal, book and toys her family received from our Home for the Holidays event and she’s grateful for the ongoing virtual engagement CCRC provides for her children.
“We had planned to start our twins in preschool this year but their school hasn’t reopened,” Rosalyn Skelton says of her 4-year-old twins. “I’ve been worried about them starting transitional kindergarten next year because they’re not in preschool this year, so they’re not getting exposure to the normal basics. But then CCRC started doing virtual story time and that has been really great. (My twins) are now able to follow directions to sit and listen and they’re hitting those important developmental milestones.”
Rosalyn says she’s also grateful for the way CCRC has connected parents during this pandemic.
“We’ve also participated in the virtual parent cafes, which have been nice because we’ve been doing programs so routinely, I can actually see these families, build relationships and have a sense of community,” Rosalyn says.
Every child deserves to have the materials needed to complete their school assignments and focus on their education instead of supplies. By participating in CCRC events like virtual bingo, you help provide essential learning materials to our neighbors like the Skelton Family.
